The concept of women police is as old as the recorded Indian history. Kautilya's Arthashastra which was written in 310 BC contains the record of women intelligence and spying. Kautilya's Arthashastra does not mention women officially working as police servants.
Women policing as an institution is a recent development. The need for women police was felt in India during the labor strike in Kanpur in the year 1938. The situation to manually lift the women workers to disrupt the strike was the factor that contributed to the emergence of women in police services.

Let me first congratulate Mrs Ranu Sahay for exploring this sensitive subject. The subject reflects that the society has transformed drastically over the years and how females in India have evoloved from being a homemaker to country's law defender. How the stories of few women in Indian police have given self belief to the majority and boosted them to aspire, think and stretch beyond the normal household tasks and eventually provided directions to all those who wanted to be the face of India and not just the female behind the succesful face.
