History of Women Policing in the United States

For the first time, the word 'police' as an organized civil force was established in England, historically related to river Thames in the year 1798-1800.

United States of America was the first country to understand the requirement for women in police services at the time when police matrons were being appointed in New York in the year 1845. The main responsibility of women cops was to deal with women and girls in police custody. The first effort in this direction was taken by an organization "Women Christian Temperance Union". Insipred by the efforts of this organization other cities started appointing police matrons too.

Women policing was recognized all over the United States since 1910, when a social worker Alice Stebbins Wells held a position of policewoman in the Los Angeles Police departmant (LAPD).
