Deplorable Behavior of the Women Police in Tamil Nadu

There are various complaints from the families in Tamil Nadu that AWPS women cops were forcefully arresting men & their family members for small matrimonial disputes. Few of the families also claim false allegations. AWPS started in 1992 with an intention to reduce the dowry crimes, dowry deaths and suicide. Some 400 petitions are received every year from women by the 37 All Women Police Stations in Chennai. Now there have been charges that this power is being misused by women to drag their husbands and in-laws for small arguments. Women cops are charged for using 3rd degree in handling these cases and purposely making arrests on Fridays so that bail is not available over the weekend.

The Madras High Court suggested to the police department and the government that social workers/mediators should be included in the AWPS teams. Presently, there are more than 300 AWPS all over India. People argue that if wives take the family disputes directly to the custody, the chances of resolution become difficult. It is hard to restart a good family life after the custody’s bitter experience. Instead, social workers should first help in resolving the matter peacefully. The court's decision was in favor of the people demanding for inclusion of social workers in the AWPS teams.

Justice R. Regupathi also declared that arrest in matrimonial disputes, particularly of the aged, infirm, sick persons and minors shall not be made by the Station Home Officers of the AWPS. If arrest was essential in the investigation, a written approval from the Superintendent of Police was required.

Using government powers responsibly is indeed a national issue. Do you think that because of few women police officers' wrongful behavior, the entire AWPS is being looked down upon? Do you think the inclusion of social workers/mediators will be in the best interest of all?
